Care
We recommend the following care for your prosthesis:
Daily:
All cleaning is done with the prosthesis in the socket.
To clean the prosthesis:
- Place a tissue under the lower lid
- Rinse the prosthesis and lids with an ophthalmic irrigating solution (Bausch and Lomb Eye Wash).
- Wiping towards your nose, wipe away any mucus that remains with the tissue.
- Place one drop of enuclene (allergen) on the front surface of the prosthesis.
- Avoid touching the tip of the bottles.
Every six months:
Your prosthesis requires periodic professional cleaning in order to remain comfortable. Every six months you should return to your ocularist so that the ocularist can:
- Clean and reglaze the prosthesis
- Check the fit of your prosthesis
Every five years:
The average length of use to be expected from an ocular prosthesis is is approximately five years. Your ocularist will check periodically to determine when your prosthesis needs replacement.
If you experience discomfort or pain:
A short adjustment period is normal with any new prosthesis. If you experience more than an awareness that the prosthesis is in the socket, or more than a slight increase in mucus discharge, please remove the prosthesis and call your ocularist.
