Your New Eye

At your first appointment, you will have the opportunity to get to know the Ocularist and to raise any questions or concerns you may have. Please do not worry about your visit being painful.  Most patients have little or no discomfort during their visits. The Ocularist will do a brief examination, explain what he is going to do for you, and make an initial impression of your ocular orbit.   This appointment generally lasts one hour.  Remember to write down any questions you have so you will not forget to ask them!

At your second appointment, the Ocularist will make the wax form shape of your new prosthesis. This form will enable the Ocularist to create a prosthesis which will open your lids to look like your existing eye. This appointment generally lasts one half hour.

During the third visit, the ocular prosthesis (artificial eye) is painted to match your remaining eye.  The color, veining, and pupil of your eye will be duplicated while you sit across from the Ocularist.  This visit will take approximately one hour.

Finally, during the fourth visit, the completed prosthesis is polished and inserted.  It is then evaluated for fit and appearance.  You will be instructed on routine care of your prosthesis at this time.  The final visit will take approximately half an hour.

Four to six weeks after the prosthesis has been inserted, you will be asked to return for a follow up appointment in order to ensure that you are comfortable and the prosthesis is fitting properly.  This appointment will also last about half an hour.
